A Bride’s Guide to Engagement Photo Locations: 5 Tips for Creating the Perfect Shoot

Planning a wedding means making a lot of big decisions. First you’ll need to choose a date, then find the perfect dress, cake, venue, photographer, and more. Surprisingly, one of the decisions newly engaged couples struggle with the most is deciding on a location for their engagement photo session.

There are plenty of great engagement photo locations in Houston, but how do you decide which ones are right for you? After all, you want your engagement photos to truly reflect your personality as a couple. Here are a couple of factors to consider before making your decision.

1. Choose a Spot That is Meaningful

While you’re sorting through potential engagement photo locations, don’t forget that these photos are all about celebrating you as a couple. Try to choose a spot that’s sentimental or meaningful. For inspiration, think about the place where he popped the question, where you went for your first date, or your favorite places to spend time together.

2. Decide on the Time of Day

If you’re planning on taking outdoor photos, the time of day can make a big difference. For optimal lighting, two hours after the sun comes up or two hours before it sets is often ideal. Decide whether you want bright, sunny photos or a colorful twilight session with a sunset backdrop. Each setting can create a stunning look, so opt for the one that best reflects your personality.

3. Consider the Season

Ideally, you’ll want to schedule your photo session between January and May or October through December. This will give you the opportunity to take advantage of some of the area’s best outdoor engagement photo spots like Hermann Park or Discovery Green.

Avoid planning your photo session during the sweltering summer months in Houston, as it’s hard to look stunning when you’re sweating buckets. Winter photos can work, but only if it’s not too cold and windy. Otherwise, your photos will be overshadowed by your red eyes and flushed cheeks.

4. Make Sure Your Outfits Compliment the Location

Whether you’re planning on taking formal or casual photos, you’ll want to ensure your outfits reflect your personality and don’t look awkward in the setting you’ve chosen. Whatever you decide to wear, make sure you feel comfortable and confident. It’s often a good idea to choose at least two or three outfits and a couple of different engagement photo locations. This gives you plenty of variety and flexibility.

You might decide to don your favorite jerseys and take photos at Minute Maid Park, then put on something more formal and head to the Arboretum or dress casually and take your shoot down to the Kemah Boardwalk. Once you start using your imagination, the possibilities are literally endless.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Get Creative

Your engagement photos should be as unique as you are, so don’t be afraid to add some creativity to your shoot. Do the two of you have some hobbies you enjoy doing together? Choose a location that allows you to incorporate that into your shoot.

Many couples also want to include their beloved pets in their engagement photos. If this is your plan, you’ll need to choose pet-friendly locations that won’t have too many distractions.
