Fall is when most Houston couples want their engagement photos, and for good reason. The heat finally breaks, the light turns warm and low, and you can walk between locations without melting. Here’s how to plan a fall session in Houston: when to book, where to go, and what to wear.
When to shoot
Houston’s fall is short and late. The comfortable window runs from mid-October through early December. September still feels like summer, and by mid-December you’re competing with holiday travel. The best light is the last 90 minutes before sunset; in November that means starting around 4:00 pm.
Fall weekends book first. If you want a Saturday in October or November, reach out in August or early September. Weekday evenings are easier to get and the parks are quieter.

Where to go
We don’t get New England color here, so pick locations for light and texture instead of leaves:
- Hermann Park. Live oaks, the reflecting pool, and open lawns that glow in late light. Easy parking, lots of variety in one place.
- Downtown and Market Square. Brick, iron, and skyline. Dusk downtown in November is one of the best looks in the city.
- Rice University. Arches, cloisters, and long tree-lined paths. Classic and timeless.
- Buffalo Bayou Park. The skyline from a distance, wide sky, and sunset over the water.
- The Houston Arboretum. The closest thing to woods inside the loop, with golden grasses in the fall.
- Your own neighborhood. A front porch, a favorite coffee shop, the walk you take every evening. Photos that look like your life tend to be the ones you keep.

What to wear
Fall lets you layer, which photographs well. Think warm and deep tones: rust, olive, burgundy, camel, cream. Pick one outfit that’s dressed up and one that’s relaxed, and coordinate rather than match. Textures like knits, denim, and linen read beautifully in soft light. Bring a jacket even if it’s warm at 4:00; it cools off fast once the sun drops.
One rule: be comfortable. If shoes hurt or a collar itches, it shows in the photos.
Bring the dog
Fall is the one season your dog will actually enjoy the session. Bring a leash, a handful of treats, and someone who can hold them between shots. I’ll get a few frames with them and then let them rest while we keep going.

How a session runs
Two hours, one or two locations, all of your edited high-resolution images delivered in about three weeks. Every session includes professional editing, and if you’ve booked a wedding collection, your engagement session is already included.
